Thurmond is a great place to spend the afternoon exploring and pondering how life must have been back in the days when it was a vibrant little village. Take the time to visit the museum in the depot. They have a wonderful collection of photographs of the town in it’s heyday as well as plenty of information on the Dunglen hotel. If you can, be sure to watch the movie Matewan before you visit. It will make you time in Thurmond more interesting.
Thurmond is pretty easy to access (no dirt or gravel roads into it) and has enough original buildings standing to make it an interesting visit. Some of the buildings have exhibits in the window or beside them. There is at least one picnic table, and plenty of grassy area to spread out on. While I was walking, I saw people use the town for river access. The tracks see a fair amount of train traffic, so it's best to be careful around the tracks. If you stop by the visitor center first, the ranger and the exhibits can give you a lot of background on the history of train town.
Love how they have it real
Delightfully creepy.
A glimpse into the past when Main Street was a railroad track. There are several original buildings, including the original train station, still active as an Amtrak station. You enter the town on a unique offset truss railroad bridge, with a one lane road hanging from the side. I am glad to have visited Thurmond, West Virginia, population 5.
